University of Buckingham Supporting Overseas Schooling (UBSOS)
What we do
After the devastating tsunami of 2004 students and staff members at the University set up a fund to help those in need. Many of our current students and alumni originate from the affected countries and that is how UBSOS was born. Our main focus has been to help educate children in deprived countries and to encourage education as a means for a better life.
UBSOS organises fund raising events such as pamper days, book and tabletop sales, and raffles. We have also raised money through car washes, concerts and lectures held at the University, and through the creation of the ‘UBSOS Cookbook’ – a collection of recipes donated by staff, students and friends.
With the continuous support of friends, and the student and staff body at the University we have been able to provide study material and medical supplies in Sri Lanka, and financial help and school furniture in Kenya. We have also participated in other local projects in both countries with the help of some of our members who travelled to those destinations.
Ghana project 2018
Jordan Palmer, a local Buckingham girl and founder and CEO of the Akwaaba School in Accra Ghana, has been able to purchase desks with the donation given by the UBSOS. She says:
“They are being put to good use already! A HUGE thankyou again from us and the Akwaaba team”.
Tanzania project 2018
Patricia Prada Jimenez (Int’l Studies w French ’06), works with the Warioba Centre in Tanzania and sends the message below to thank UBSOS for their donation towards the renovation of the school buildings:
“I can’t tell you how grateful I am and how happy to know that we can work together to help deserving children such as these at the Warioba Centre. On behalf of Warioba and myself I would like to thank everyone on the UBSOS team. Our work means so much more with your help.”
Syrian refugee project 2016/17
Two students, Aras Asaad (MPhil/DPhil Mathematics, 2018) and Tahir Hassan (MSc Applied Computing, 2018), expressed their concern for the refugees in their home town of Koya, Iraq, and UBSOS offered to help by arranging a clothing collection and providing school supplies for the children who had been left with no means of an education after fleeing their country.

We are extremely grateful to those who have helped us so far. There is, however, still a lot more to be done. Having access to education is a way of achieving a better life.
